Web 2.0 for Kids! Want safe and protected sites online for kids? Try kidthing*

Posted by Talula on March 8, 2008

The internet is a terrific learning tool for kids; but many families and teachers heve trouble finding places for kids to explore the tools while staying safe from predators online.

I recommend a new social platform for kids online that is still in Beta development; but was created with kids and families safe learning experiences foremost in their plans. I saw it on one of my favorite kids literacy blogs: Literacy Is Priceless, a blog for Reading Teachers: see blogroll!

It is called kidthing* <click here to go to site.

What does kidthing* do?             Here is some points taken from their site.

         – it is not a web browser, it lives on your hard drive/so kids don’t surf the net.

         – it is a safe and secure place for kids to learn, read, play games, create/use  educational material

         – it gives parents choices, and is contolled by the grown-ups account

         – the kidthing* store offers a wide variety of learning  materials

         – kidthings* lets you make your own learning play mix

         – it allows for personalization (as in a book with a child’s name as one of the charactors)

         – it fosters sharing (as in Grandma can record herself reading to the child, then the child can download & listen/ or creating a song or story – then sending it to friends or family members)

Try it out and give them feedback while its still in Beta development and have your say about its best (or not so good) parts, all for free!

This post is a little late in the day; due to a major wonkiness in my computer hard drive — will expand on that issue later.

Now for a proper celebration.

HAPPY CHINESE NEW YEAR!   IT IS ‘THE YEAR OF THE RAT’!

WHICH MEANS THOSE WHO ARE EARTHY-TYPE PEOPLE AND HIDDEN TREASURES CAN BE FOUND TO BE GOOD AND PROSPEROUS THIS YEAR; BUT ALSO BE CAREFUL OF SECURITY (HIDDEN SECRETS, STOLEN ITEMS, BREAK-INS PARTICULARLY WITH HOMES WHICH HAVE AN ENTRANCE ON THE SOUTH SIDE OF THE HOME).  CHINESE FOLKLORE IN THE YEAR OF THE RAT SUGGESTS TO ENJOY THE EARTHY  FOLKS AND HIDDEN TREASURES, WHILE BEING CAUTIOUS OF YOUR HOME’S SECURITY.

Celebrate by reading some wonderful folk tales from Asian cultures. Here at Barefoot Books we have several Asian-inspired items with gorgeous illustrations and some quotes about certain titles from some very famous people! Have a fun look at the list below.

We’re Riding on a Caravan ( An Adventure on the Silk Road)

The Great Race (The Story of the Chinese Zodiac)

Stories from the Silk Road (an expanded anthology [collection] of stories from Asian folklore)

Tenzin’s Deer (“This beautifully illustrated story aptly reflects the values pervading Tibetan culture” The Dalai Lama)

My Daddy is a Pretzel (Yoga for Parents and Kids) (“This book conveys [yoga’s] wisdom to kids and grown-ups alike in a way that combines light-hearted humor with high purpose – try it and see!” —Deepak Chopra

Yoga Pretzels (50 Fun Yoga Activities for Kids & Grownups) (“Yoga Pretzels is a fantastic way to spend quality time with my kids. Together, we exercise our bodies and minds leaving us feeling energized and refreshed! I’d highly recommend it to anyone with children” Caterine Zeta-Jones, actor & mother.

Putumayo Asian Dreamland CD ( …tranquil lullabies…)

Motherbridge of Love ( A story of the connection between the East [birth mother] & West [adoptive mother] and the child they shared in creating) Author: Xinran

folkmanis RED DRAGON PUPPET  (20 inches long , perfect for enacting our stories in your classroom )

Today Is ‘Focus The Nation’ Org – Kid’s Environmental Events

Posted by Talula on January 31, 2008

Looking for kids environmental events?

Today is the day that Focus The Nation Organization’s blog webcasts are being played in over 14oo schools and colleges around the country. Events are planned for January 31, 2008 (tomorrow/Saturday) at those schools & colleges to educate children, families and teachers about

“Global Warming Solutions for America”.

Events are being attended or supported by folks such as Barak Obama, Arnold Schwarznegger, Nancy Pelosi, Bob Inglis, Richard Cizik, Winona LaDuke, Edward Norton, Woody Harrelson. Want to find out who in the political headlines is

“The Green Canditate” — go to www.LiveEarth.org and check out who is on board.

You can find an event near you at    www.focusthenation.org

If you don’t think you have time to organize this event at your school; then discuss it and plan to hold a viewing of “The 2% Solution” in the next two weeks and register your public/private/non-profit/church school to download the films from Focus The Nation.

For extension curriculum materials go to www.ClimateChangeEducation.org to find materials suited for K-12, colleges, and universities.

The sponsor is the same group backing last summer’s  ‘Live Earth’ round the world concerts. CDs and film shorts are available from the original 2007 concerts and the new ‘Focus the Nation’ educational events at www.liveearth.org , so check them out for material to use for kid’s enviromental awareness curriculum.

I have finally gotten around to the list – sorry, it was quarterly tax time last weekend; so was a little busier than anticipated.  Since there were a ton of hits on Monday — I felt sufficently  guilty enough to jump on this today (Tuesday). So with no further ado; here it is!

Barefoot Books Titles and the AR (Accelerated Reader) level = books on the list are worth 0.5 points per quiz.

Thanks go to another Barefoot Stallholder (Jennifer A. of Tacoma, Washington) for this list. Jennifer also supplied a telephone number to Renaissance Learning customer service in Wisconsin (parent company of the AR).  Books on the list can be seen & purchased here on my Barefoot Books website; and your school librarian can order them through normal channels for use in your class, along with the quizzes.  Corresponding Activity Sheets for some of the books can be found on the Barefoot sight to expand the visual and kinesthetic learning modes. You can email me or leave a comment for any questions on these  activity sheets. I will go check to see the actual page and then place it here with an edit:    Barefoot ACTIVITY SHEETS <click here for the activity sheets PDFs.

Here are 2 examples:  A) Creepy Crawly Calypso       B) Fun With Thesaurus Rex

Renaissance Learning customer service number (1-800-338-4204) to answer any questions on the AR program.
